Wow! Dr. Beal and his team are amazing! I had a lot done including upper Bleph, rinophyma treatment, co2 laser full face and some minor fillers. I’m 57 and I had the procedures done four months ago. It was important to me to look natural. He listened and friends and family say I look so young and rested! His upper bleph work and rinophyma was artistry! My results were better than I ever anticipated. The team there worked with my schedule for my follow up appointments because I traveled from out of state to have the procedures with Dr. Beal. I would give a 10 Star review, if I could.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for leaving us a stellar review!
Dr. Swofford is very friendly, thorough, professional, and kind. I feel comfortable pointing out my skin concerns because Dr. Swofford never makes me feel stupid. The office staff is friendly and welcoming. The facility is clean and comfortable.
Response from the owner:Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you for the review!

This is one of the best Dermatologist buildings around here in Troy. I don't have to travel very far and the staff as well as the doctors are the most considerate and very polite. I would recommend any one to go here if they have any problems with their body according to cancer or any other problems with their body. They get you in and out as soon as they can! I just can't say enough of how proud I am that I decided to go to them.
Response from the owner:Your feedback is highly appreciated. Thank you for the review!

Cyst vs. Pimple: What’s the Difference?

Although they may appear similar on the surface, cysts and pimples are fundamentally different in their formation, texture, and response to treatment.

Pimples (a form of acne):

  • Caused by clogged pores, bacteria, and excess oil
  • Usually appear red, with a white or yellow pus-filled head
  • Found on the face, chest, back, and shoulders
  • Often respond to over-the-counter acne products or prescription medications

Cysts (a deeper skin lesion):

  • Form under the skin when oil glands or hair follicles become blocked
  • Usually larger, deeper, and more painful than pimples
  • It may feel like a hard lump under the skin
  • Typically, they do not resolve on their own
  • Often need professional drainage, injections, or surgical removal

In short: all cysts may look like pimples at first, but not all pimples are cysts. If something is not healing, worsening, or causing pain, it may be time to consult a professional.

Signs You May Have a Cyst (And Why It Won’t Go Away on Its Own)

Cysts are often mistaken for stubborn pimples that “just won’t pop,” but they tend to:

  • Feel like a firm, round bump deep under the skin
  • Appear red or skin-toned (and sometimes develop a dark center)
  • It is painful to the touch, especially when inflamed
  • Last for weeks, months, or longer
  • Become infected or rupture if left untreated

Many patients attempt to pop or squeeze cysts, which can increase inflammation, the risk of infection, and the potential for scarring. Unlike surface-level acne, cysts form deeper in the skin and require different care.

When At-Home Treatments Are Dangerous

While some mild pimples can be treated with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or good skincare, cysts should never be squeezed or lanced at home. Doing so can:

  • Push the contents deeper into the skin
  • Trigger more inflammation or infection
  • Causes permanent scarring
  • Lead to the formation of additional cysts

If a lump is growing, painful, or hasn’t improved in several weeks, it’s time to see a dermatologist. Early intervention leads to better outcomes and minimal scarring.

How SLD in Troy, MO Treats Cysts Safely and Effectively

At St. Louis Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, we offer in-office procedures to diagnose and treat cysts with precision and minimal discomfort.

Treatment Options Include:

1. Steroid Injections

Ideal for inflamed or painful cysts. A small injection of corticosteroid into the lesion can:

  • Rapidly reduce inflammation
  • Minimize swelling and tenderness
  • Help the cyst flatten within days

2. Incision and Drainage (I&D)

For cysts filled with fluid or pus, a small incision is made under local anesthesia to safely drain the contents. This relieves pressure and promotes healing.

3. Surgical Removal

Some cysts need to be excised entirely—especially if they’re large, recurring, or infected. Our dermatologic surgery team carefully removes the cyst capsule to reduce the chance of recurrence.

Our goal is to provide long-term relief, not just short-term fixes. We also help you manage any underlying acne or skin conditions that may be contributing to the formation of cysts.
