What Is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a brand of neuromodulator, an injectable medication that temporarily relaxes the small muscles responsible for certain facial lines. Like other neuromodulators, it treats dynamic wrinkles: the creases that form when you frown, squint, or raise your brows. By easing that muscle movement, the skin above has a chance to smooth and soften in the days after treatment.

What sets Xeomin apart is how it’s made. It’s a purified formulation that contains only the active molecule, with the surrounding “complexing” proteins removed, which is why it’s sometimes described as a “naked” toxin. It’s one of several neuromodulators we offer, alongside Botox and Dysport; our wrinkle relaxer overview compares all three side by side.

Why Choose Xeomin?

For most people, Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin all work beautifully, and the choice comes down to fit. Xeomin’s purified, protein-free formula is the reason it appeals to certain patients in particular:

  • Reduced response to other products: a small number of people develop antibodies to the complexing proteins in other neuromodulators over time, which can make those treatments feel less effective. Because Xeomin lacks those proteins, it’s sometimes chosen in that situation.
  • A preference for a “clean” formula: some patients simply prefer a neuromodulator stripped down to the active ingredient.
  • The same natural goal: like the others, Xeomin softens lines while keeping your expressions your own.

Whether Xeomin is the right choice for you, rather than Botox or Dysport, is exactly the kind of thing your consultation sorts out.

What Xeomin Can Treat

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines (the “11s” between the brows)
  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes

As with the other neuromodulators, Xeomin can also be used in more advanced ways in experienced hands, such as softening a dimpled chin or easing jaw tension. What suits you depends on your anatomy and is decided together at your consultation.

Xeomin, Botox, or Dysport?

All three are excellent FDA-approved neuromodulators that relax the muscles behind dynamic wrinkles, and no single one is right for everyone. Xeomin’s distinguishing feature is its purified, protein-free formula. Botox has the longest track record and is often chosen for precise work, while Dysport tends to act quickly and spread smoothly across broader areas. We offer all three, so the choice is based on what fits you, not on what’s in stock. Our wrinkle relaxer overview lays out the comparison in detail.

Xeomin also pairs well with dermal fillers, which restore volume and soften static lines present even at rest, a different job than relaxing muscles. Many patients combine the two.

Common questions

Xeomin FAQs.

What makes Xeomin different from Botox?

The main difference is the formula. Xeomin is purified so that it contains only the active molecule, with the surrounding proteins removed, while Botox includes those complexing proteins. In terms of how they treat wrinkles, onset and duration are broadly similar. Some patients prefer Xeomin’s “clean” formula, and it’s sometimes chosen for people who have stopped responding as well to other products over time.

How long does Xeomin last?

Results are temporary and commonly last a few months, depending on the individual, the area treated, and the dose. Softening begins within a few days and develops over about two weeks. Maintenance treatments keep the effect going over time.

Who is a good candidate for Xeomin?

Most healthy adults bothered by dynamic forehead, frown, or crow’s feet lines are candidates for a neuromodulator. Xeomin can be a particularly good fit for those who prefer a purified formula or who feel another product has become less effective for them. A consultation confirms whether it’s appropriate for you.

Does Xeomin hurt, and is there downtime?

The injections use a very fine needle and take only a few minutes; most people describe brief, minor pinches. There’s typically little to no downtime. Minor redness or small bumps at the injection sites usually settle quickly, and you can generally return to your day.

Is Xeomin safe?

Xeomin is an FDA-approved treatment with a well-established safety profile, and serious complications are uncommon when treatment is provided by qualified, exceptional professionals. The most common side effects are temporary and minor, such as bruising at an injection site, headache, or, rarely, a temporary eyelid droop. Your provider will review what to expect beforehand.
