Why You Shouldn’t Try to Pop a Hard Lump Under Your Skin

Understanding what these lumps are, what causes them, and how to manage them safely is key to preventing complications and promoting healthy skin.

Many people notice what appears to be a pimple forming under the skin, only to find that it becomes a firm, painful lump that never comes to a head. The natural response might be to try to squeeze or drain it — but doing so can cause more harm than good.

So greatful to have this office in Troy. Dr Beal and Dr Swofford are awesome. I've had skin cancer surgery, red light procedure and a plantar wart removal on my foot. All with great results. Staff in the office is always polite and professional. If you need a dermatologist, I highly recommend them.

I got there early for my appointment time expecting to wait until the time of my appointment, but instead I was seen promptly with very kind and personable staff. I was home by the minute my appointment was supposed to start. My issue was addressed and a plan of care was decided between the Dr and I instead of just getting ordered what to do. I felt heard. I enjoyed this office very much!
Response from the owner:We are thrilled to learn that you had a positive experience with us!

Love this office! Great people and they make me feel at ease. I had a full body scan today, which would make anyone a little self-conscious, but it was so comfortable and easy. I can’t say enough nice things about this location, and these people.
Response from the owner:We appreciate the kind words and are glad we could provide you with a positive experience!

A hard lump beneath the skin is not always a simple pimple. Several conditions can cause this type of bump, and identifying the correct one is essential for proper treatment.

Cystic acne develops when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria become trapped deep within a hair follicle. This leads to inflammation and the formation of a painful, deep lesion that typically does not come to the surface. These cysts can take weeks to resolve without treatment and may leave scars if manipulated.

These cysts occur when skin cells or oil become trapped under the surface, forming a smooth, round lump. They can remain small and painless for years but may become red, swollen, or tender if inflamed or infected.

A lipoma is a benign fatty growth that forms slowly under the skin. Lipomas are generally soft and move slightly when touched. They are not dangerous but may require removal if they become large or uncomfortable.

An abscess is a pocket of pus that forms when bacteria enter the skin. It usually appears red, swollen, and painful, sometimes with warmth or drainage. A medical professional should treat abscesses to prevent further infection.

Attempting to pop or drain a lump under the skin can lead to several complications. While it may seem like a quick fix, it often worsens the underlying issue.

Squeezing can push bacteria and debris deeper into the skin, increasing the risk of inflammation and infection. What may have been a minor issue can develop into a larger, more painful abscess.

Applying pressure to a deep lesion can rupture the surrounding tissue, leading to long-term scarring or skin discoloration.

Not all lumps are acne-related. Attempting to treat a cyst, lipoma, or abscess as a pimple can delay appropriate medical evaluation and care.

Fluid released from a ruptured cyst or abscess can spread bacteria to nearby skin, potentially causing additional lesions.

Occasionally, a lump under the skin can represent another dermatologic or medical condition that requires professional assessment. Improper handling can make evaluation more difficult later.

If you notice a firm lump under your skin, there are several safe steps you can take while awaiting professional care.

  • 1. Apply a Warm Compress: Using a clean, warm (not hot) compress for 10–15 minutes several times daily may help reduce inflammation and promote natural healing.
  • 2. Avoid Touching or Picking: Hands can transfer bacteria and irritate the skin, worsening inflammation. Avoid squeezing, scratching, or pressing on the area.
  • 3. Use Gentle Skincare Products: Choose mild, non-comedogenic cleansers and avoid harsh exfoliants or alcohol-based products, which can aggravate the skin barrier.
  • 4. Monitor for Changes: Keep track of any changes in size, color, or pain level. If the lump grows, becomes warm, or begins to drain fluid, seek medical attention promptly.
  • 5. Schedule a Dermatology Appointment: A dermatologist can accurately diagnose the cause and provide safe, effective treatment options. At SLD, we assess each case carefully to ensure the most appropriate care plan.

Depending on the cause and severity, treatment may include:

  • Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and pain
  • Incision and drainage are performed under sterile conditions when appropriate
  • Antibiotic therapy for bacterial infections or abscesses
  • Oral or topical acne medications for cystic acne
  • Surgical removal for cysts or lipomas that do not resolve or cause discomfort
