What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels, most commonly made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body produces naturally, used to restore volume that’s been lost, smooth certain lines, and refine facial contours. Where wrinkle relaxers ease the muscle movement that creates dynamic lines, fillers do a different job: they add structure and volume back where age, or anatomy, has taken it away.

The goal at St. Louis Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery is always balance, not excess. Filler is placed conservatively and anatomically, so the result is a refreshed, rested version of you, not an obviously “done” look.

What Dermal Fillers Can Treat

Different areas call for different filler types and techniques. Which areas to treat, and whether filler is the right tool at all, is decided together at your consultation.

  • Lips: subtle definition, hydration, and balanced volume, for a natural result, not an overfilled one.
  • Cheeks: restoring midface volume that flattens with age, which can also lift the lower face.
  • Under-eyes (tear trough): softening hollows and shadowing for a more rested look, a delicate area where experience matters.
  • Jawline and chin: adding definition and structure to the lower face and profile.
  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines: softening the deeper folds that run from nose to mouth and mouth to chin.
  • Non-surgical nose refinement: smoothing minor contour irregularities of the nose without surgery, in carefully selected cases.

Many of these areas have dedicated treatment options, including lip fillers, cheek fillers, and tear trough filler. Your consultation is the place to map which approach fits your face.

Your Filler Visit

1

Consultation

We talk through what you’d like to change, assess your facial structure, and recommend which areas, and which filler, would restore balance. Sometimes the honest answer is less than you expected.

2

Treatment

Filler is placed using a fine needle or cannula, often with numbing for comfort. Most treatments take well under an hour, and you’ll see a difference right away.

3

Recovery & Results

Minor swelling or bruising can occur and usually settles within a few days. Results are visible immediately and continue to refine as any swelling resolves. Most fillers last several months to over a year, depending on the product and area.

Results You Can Expect

Most patients see restored volume and softer contours immediately, with the final result settling as any swelling resolves over the following days. How long results last depends on the filler used, the area treated, and your own metabolism, and some areas hold longer than others. Because hyaluronic-acid fillers are temporary, maintenance treatments keep the result going, and treatment can be built up gradually so the change stays natural.

Results vary.A consultation is required to determine whether dermal fillers are appropriate for you, and treatment plans are individualized. Fillers temporarily restore volume and soften the appearance of lines; results differ from person to person and are not permanent.

Fillers or Wrinkle Relaxers?

They solve different problems and often work best together. Wrinkle relaxers (Botox, Dysport) relax the muscles that create dynamic lines, the creases that appear when you move. Fillers restore volume and address static lines and hollows that are present even at rest. Many patients use both: relaxers for the upper face, filler for volume and contour. Dr. Beal will tell you which combination, if any, suits your goals.

A Note on Longer-Lasting Volume

For volume loss specifically, filler isn’t the only option. Fat grafting uses your own tissue for a longer-lasting result and can treat larger areas, a surgical alternative worth discussing if you find yourself maintaining filler frequently. Many patients start with filler and consider grafting later; there’s no wrong order.

Common questions

Dermal filler FAQs.

How long do dermal fillers last?

It depends on the filler and the area. Many hyaluronic-acid fillers last from several months to over a year; some areas metabolize filler faster than others. Because results are temporary, occasional maintenance keeps the effect going. Your provider will give you a realistic range for the specific treatment at your consultation.

Does it hurt, and is there downtime?

Most patients tolerate filler well, especially with numbing, and many fillers also contain a local anesthetic. There’s typically little downtime. Minor swelling, tenderness, or bruising at the injection sites can occur and usually settles within a few days.

Will I look natural, or overfilled?

Natural is the goal, and it comes from conservative, anatomic placement, restoring balance rather than chasing volume. Treatment can be built up gradually across visits so the change stays subtle. The “overfilled” look comes from overcorrection, which a measured approach is designed to avoid.

Are hyaluronic-acid fillers reversible?

One advantage of hyaluronic-acid fillers is that, in many cases, they can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed, for example, to adjust a result. Not every filler type is reversible, so this is something to discuss with Dr. Beal based on the product chosen for your treatment.

Is filler safe?

Fillers are among the most common aesthetic treatments, and serious complications are uncommon when treatment is provided by qualified, exceptional professionals who understand facial anatomy. That’s why provider experience matters, particularly in delicate areas like the under-eyes and nose. Your provider will review the relevant considerations and your health history before treatment.

Refreshed, and still you.
